Destination Overview: Obidos and Foz do Arelho are home to incredible beaches and a rugged landscape that set the stage for an epic kitesurf holidays out in nature. Walk around the lagoon or above the cliffs to watch "golden hour" sunset; it's is a priceless experience sure to light up any Instagram feed.
The kitesurf lagoon at Obidos is quite large with ample riding, this kitespot is a solid 5/5 for beginners and flat water. The windy season is in the summer. However, note that in the summer, the front section of the lagoon is restricted, and kiters must stick to the back.
If you're looking for a well-rounded activity trip, there is an endless number of surf spots for different levels, mountain bike trails, paragliding take-offs, and running trails. Obidos and Foz are a paradise for outdoor activities lovers!
Best beginner kitespot: Most of the lagoon is super beginner-friendly.
Best flat water kitespot: Obidos lagoon, south side.
Best wave kitespot: A 25min drive gets you to Peniche where world-class surf awaits. Alternatively, there's decent wave riding where the lagoon meets the ocean.
Notable downwinders: It's possible to do a downwinder from Obidos lagoon towards Baleal, but this is reserved for advanced kiteboarders only as the surf can be substantial!
Significant wind patterns: The "Nortada" north-west wind kicks in from around April through October and summer thermals can reinforce the effect.
After-kite food & drink recommendations: N'Aldeia restaurant for before and after kite food! And Baleal (Danau bar) to have drinks at night.
