The Best Travel Destination Search Requires The Best Data

Below is our guide to how we created data for some of the more subjective preferences in our iOS kiteboard search. We are still early in our development; constantly learning, updating and improving. Our data is awesome already, but if you think it could be better, drop us a note: team@ripatrip.com

General

  • We recommend you consider RipATrip a guide or first step in planning your adventure travel. Please perform further research prior to booking any travel.

  • Our objective is to help direct you to the best destinations at the best time. Accordingly, all ratings are based on conditions during high/windy season.

  • Data corresponds to any or all launches within 50km.

  • The below corresponds to our kiteboard travel search in our app which is no longer available. Our search functionality will be updated and included in our website September 2019.

Location Preferences

  • Min Air Temp: Min average monthly high temperature

  • Max Rain Days/Month: Max days with > 2mm precipitation

  • Cost Lodging/Food: Daily cost 1 lunch, dinner, & double room at midrange hotel. Stars:

    • < $50 =1

    • < $100 = 2

    • < $150 = 3

    • < $200 = 4

    • + $200 = 5

  • Restaurants and Bars: Includes dine-in and take-out

  • Min Wifi Coverage: Prevalence of public access points

Kiteboarding Preferences

  • Min Wind (kts) -> Days/Month: Select your wind speed preference and frequency. Example: Min 12 knots wind, min +20 days/month

  • Max Wetsuit:

    • 0 = Average high water temp > 21°C

    • SS (short-sleeve) = Average high water temp ≤ 21°C

    • 3/2 = Average high water temp < 17°C

    • 4/3 = Average high water temp < 13°C

    • 5/4+ = Average high water temp < 8°C

      Flat Water Grade:

  • 1= Open coast with deep water

  • 2= Open coast with minimal protection (reefs, etc.)

  • 3= Coast with moderate (islands, peninsulas) protection or extensive shallow water

  • 4= Enclosed areas > 1 sq. km & significant shallow water

  • 5= Enclosed areas < 1 sq. km & significant shallow water

Not Crowded (“Crowded” = too busy to enjoy. “Popular” = busy but enjoyable)

  • 1= Most options crowded (lagoons, small lakes)

  • 2= Crowded shoreline/launches but deep water not

  • 3= Main launches popular but other launches exist

  • 4= Vast kiteable shoreline

  • 5= Generally < 25 kiters at peak season

Beginner Friendly (max 5 points):

  • 2 points for flat water rating of 4 or 5, one point for flat water of 3

  • 1 point for “Not Crowded” rating of 3 or higher

  • 1 point for limited rocks/obstacles

  • 1 point for “Accommodation < 200m of launch” tag

  • 1 point for “Launch Space > 25m” tag

Other Activities (generally within ~50km, max 5 points):  

  • 1 point for established surfing lessons or fishing charters (open ocean)

  • 1 point for flat water & established non-kite rentals (smaller water)

  • 1 point for tourist center

  • 1 point for mountain/hills (provides multiple activity options)

  • 1 point for historic site seeing

  • 1 point for other notable activities

Nightlife:

  • 1= Limited to people at your accommodation; < 100 kiters per km

  • 2= A social spot exists for people from different hotels

  • 3= 2-3 weekly busy bar nights within 10km

  • 4= 2-3 weekly busy bar nights & it’s a busy “tourist venue” for non-kiters

  • 5= 3-7 weekly busy bar nights & it’s a busy “party/nightlife venue” for non-kiters

Family Friendly (max 5 points):

  • 2 points for “Accommodation < 200m of launch” tag

  • 1 point for a score of 4 or 5 for “Other Activities”

  • 1 point for 30+ for Restaurants

  • 1 point for “Moderate” or “High” wifi

  • 1 point for “Flat Water” rating of 3 or higher

Features

  • Accommodation < 200m of launch: Minimum 5+ operators

  • Downwinders > 10 km: Shoreline must have public, safe access

  • Waves 1-2m: 1-2m waves at a launch or within 500m of shoreline

  • Waves 2m+: 2m+ waves at a launch or within 500m of shoreline

  • Launch Space > 25m: can include shallow water (<1m)
